MCINNES AND BRUCE PUT KETTLE ON FOR MACMILLAN

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 16th Sep 2009

Alison McInnes MSP and Malcolm Bruce MP will help a leading cancer charity raise a massive £8m - by putting the kettle on.

The Liberal Democrat politicians are taking part in Macmillan Cancer Support's "World's Biggest Coffee Morning" and would like as many local people as possible to show their support.

Alison McInnes said:

"In the UK today one in three people are affected by cancer and two million people have cancer or have experienced it.

"I know that a considerable number of constituents have personal experience of the problems a cancer diagnosis can bring to both patients and their family, and I know that Macmillan has been there to support many of those in need. Macmillan Cancer Support is there for people from the moment they are diagnosed offering medical and practical help as well as emotional and financial support.

"That is why Malcolm and I will be hosting a coffee morning at the Liberal Democrat Office, 71 High Street in Inverurie on Friday 25 September and we would like to invite constituents to drop in."

Malcolm Bruce added:

"I would also urge all of you to consider hosting your own coffee morning or coffee evening. It is an easy and fun way of raising money for Macmillan, and every penny you raise will help people with cancer.

"Last year thousands of people across the UK took part in coffee mornings raising £7.5m for Macmillan. This year the charity hopes to raise even more to help fund vital cancer services in the Gordon area."

Director of Macmillan Cancer Support, Elspeth Atkinson, said: "We are extremely grateful to Alison McInnes and Malcolm Bruce for holding a coffee morning to raise money for us. All of the money raised will fund local cancer services, and I am sure it will be a great opportunity for the MSP and MP to get to know their constituents better.

"Hopefully their participation will also encourage even more local people to sign up to host their own event. I would urge everyone to join in the "Worlds Biggest Coffee Morning" on Friday 25 September and help Macmillan reach more local people affected by cancer. Make your coffee count."

Ends.
