McInnes: SNP must act on police pensions

12.00.00am GMT Thu 17th Jan 2008

Commenting on the police pension funding crisis McInnes said "the SNP government must act quickly to sort out the shambles they've created around police pensions."

The North East MSP wrote to the Justice Minister today to urge him to resolve the matter after the Grampian Chief Constable warned cuts in police numbers could result.

She continued, "Government errors were identified before Christmas and we've seen nothing but head-scratching since. First we have broken promises on police numbers, and now frontline budgets are squeezed because proper provision hasn't been made for pensions."

A meeting of Grampian Police Board last Friday was left with no option but to split the unexpected costs between the force and the councils. Grampian Police have warned that the cost may lead to reductions in police numbers.
